Residence Hall Essentials: What to Pack (and What to Leave at Home)

by Evangeline Q.

Hello everyone! I鈥檓 Evangeline, and I am a rising second year studying Chemical Engineering + Engineering Design, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship (EDIE) in the College of Engineering. I just went through my first year at Carnegie Mellon and wanted to share my thoughts and experiences on what to pack versus what to leave at home. 听

This list is built from personal experiences and advice from friends. Ultimately, what you choose to bring depends on two main factors:听
Housing Assignment听
糖心Vlog视频 has a variety of housing options such as traditional double, semi-suites, apartment-style and even singles that vary in space and amenities. I would recommend looking through the Video Room Tours in the First-Year Housing website.听

Travel Distance听
There is a huge difference in what students pack depending on whether you are international versus driving five hours from the DMV. This dictates the types and amount of items you should bring and what you may buy once you arrive in Pittsburgh.

Keeping that in mind, we can begin the list. Last year, I lived in Stever House (#SteverFever) in a traditional double layout. In moving to Pittsburgh, I had over thirteen hours of travel time, and therefore had to be selective about what would go into my suitcases. On the other hand, my roommate drove to Pittsburgh and had more flexibility about what she could bring along. The list below reflects these two experiences. 听

What to Pack听
Desk Lamp + Mood Lighting听
Desk Lamps do not come with the room, so you should bring them for when you have to study.
The fairy lights and orange lamp in our room set a very cozy and vibey space to have fun social hangouts with friends.听

Quality Umbrella + Raincoat + Shoes you are okay with getting muddy听
Please learn from me and do not get a flimsy umbrella that, one night when it downpours, will get suctioned into a wire fence. 听听听听听

Shoe Mat听
Allow your umbrella, shower shoes and rain shoes to dry off without making your dorm rug crusty with road salt :)

Clothes with your House Colors!!!听
Every residence hall at Carnegie Mellon has a designated 鈥渉ouse color,鈥 and you鈥檒l want to be sure to wear it to represent your house at the Carnegie Cup during orientation week!听

Leave at Home
Trash Cans + Bags
All rooms come with bins, and there are trash bags in the closets.听

Winter Gear *听
*IF you are returning home for Fall Break or Thanksgiving break, this is the perfect time to switch out your summer wardrobe for your heavy winter coat and boots. It saves precious closet space.

Lots of Sentimental/High Value Items听
You will be traveling multiple times throughout the semester, living with a roommate and generally dealing with unpredictable circumstances. If there鈥檚 an item that would leave you inconsolable if it got lost or damaged, play it safe and leave it at home.

Bean Bags + Chairs听
Most of the dorms won鈥檛 have that much extra space, so a bean bag chair will just dampen the room. They are also a hassle to get rid of once you move out.

Packing for college and figuring out logistics can feel overwhelming 鈥 like, how can I not bring all my clothes and plushies with me?! But rest assured, Pittsburgh is convenient, and you have a community to rely on. If you forget anything, there are plenty of stores around, or you can have things shipped in from home. Good luck with packing; get excited for orientation week, and see ya鈥檒l on campus! Welcome to CMU <3
