Hi! I'm Geetika, a sophomore studying chemical engineering. If you're considering CMU's College of Engineering, one thing nobody told me before I got here is how much effort the department puts into making sure you actually enjoy being an engineer and truly feel like a part of a community. I want to walk you through three of my favorite major-related events: CIT Day, ChemE Day and ChemE Wellness Day.

CIT Day is the big one. It's basically the College of Engineering throwing a party for its students, and they do not hold back. We're talking food trucks (the bulgogi rice alone was worth the trip), lawn games, balloon animals and a full petting zoo with donkeys and llamas. Yes, llamas. I walked away with a metal water bottle that I now use every single day, a picnic blanket, an amazingly designed t-shirt and a picture with a donkey (the llama was being a bit too cranky for one)! Beyond the free stuff, though, what makes CIT Day special is that it brings together every corner of the engineering community on campus; it's all happening while you're eating good food around Scaife Hall and Schenley Park, surrounded by other engineers.

ChemE Day is a smaller, department-specific version that happens in Scaife Hall early in the fall semester. Free food, stickers, arts and crafts and my personal highlight: terrarium making. I made one that still sits on my desk and has somehow survived my questionable plant care (hate to admit that I have killed a succulent before). We also got to make custom tote bags, and naturally I put my favorite chemical compound on mine (salicylic acid, for those wondering). It's a really nice way to bond with other ChemE students outside of problem sets and to actually interact with the people in your classes in a setting that doesn't involve thermodynamics.

Then in February, right when the semester starts getting heavy, the department runs ChemE Wellness Day. This one is all about decompressing: hot chocolate, coloring and games, chair massages and the best part, cats. Actual cats you can sit with and pet in between classes. I ended up staying way longer than I planned because I was chatting with one of my professors while a cat sat on my lap, which is honestly the most relaxed I've been during a school week.听
