Shane Michael is a seasoned civil engineer with more than 30 years of professional experience across the public and private sectors. A Carnegie Mellon alumnus with a master鈥檚 degree in civil engineering, he has worked on a wide range of projects spanning transportation systems, stormwater management, water supply, environmental protection, and air pollution research. After decades in practice, he returned to Carnegie Mellon to pursue an online graduate certificate offered through CMU Online, allowing him to advance his expertise without stepping away from his full-time career. Through the program, he is expanding his skill set and gaining a deeper understanding of how artificial intelligence is shaping digital twin technology and analytics, and how these emerging tools are transforming modern engineering workflows.

What motivated you to enroll in the Digital Twins and Analytics program?
Throughout my career, I鈥檝e seen how engineering tools have evolved, from early drafting systems to sophisticated 3D modeling platforms. But the next step is being able to model systems digitally and apply predictive analytics to understand how they behave over time. I wanted to learn how to do that well, and this program directly addressed that need.

How does the program connect to real-world engineering practice?
Digital twins are already widely used in industries like aerospace, and I see huge potential for them in civil and infrastructure engineering. The ability to simulate conditions, predict outcomes, and test scenarios before making decisions is incredibly valuable. This program gives you the foundation to think that way and apply it to complex, real systems.

What has stood out to you about the learning experience?
The courses are very well put together. They鈥檙e challenging in a good way and thoughtfully designed from a student perspective. I鈥檝e also really appreciated the opportunity to learn from CMU Civil Engineering faculty. Their depth of knowledge and practical insight adds a lot to the experience.

How has the program impacted you professionally?
It鈥檚 helped me think differently about modeling and analytics and how they can be integrated into engineering decision-making. Professionally and personally, it鈥檚 been a strong experience that鈥檚 expanded how I approach problems and plan for the future.
