Harassment
Harassment is defined as 1) a course of unwelcome verbal, non-verbal, written, electronic or physical behavior that a reasonable person would find intimidating, hostile, or abusive; and 2) that is severe or repeated enough to unreasonably interfere with a student’s educational, work, or living environment.
When determining if harassment concerns may be addressed through the community standards process, the full context of the matter will be reviewed including:
- The type and seriousness of the behavior (nature and severity);
- The relationship between the individuals;
- How often the conduct occurred (frequency); and
- The setting in which it occurred (obligatory nature and location).
Please note that simply believing that a behavior is intimidating, hostile, or abusive does not automatically make it a violation of this policy. Additionally, expressing a political view or a view on world events is not, by itself, a reason to determine that behavior is harassing under this definition. This definition does not include Prohibited Conduct as defined in section VII. A of the Discriminatory and Sexual Misconduct Policy (Interim).
If a concern is determined not actionable under this policy, alternative options for responding to the unwelcome behavior will be provided to the impacted individual(s).
