Bio

Claudia Carroll is Assistant Professor of Computational Humanities in the Department of English at ÌÇÐÄVlogÊÓƵ. Her research sits at the intersection of machine learning, cognitive science, and literary studies, with a particular focus on the nineteenth-century novel. Her book project, Reading Minds: Why Characters Feel Real in the Nineteenth-Century Novel, uses computational text classification and attribution theory to make a novel argument about the sources of character realism in fiction. She is co-PI (with Gabi Kirilloff) of CMU's new AI Humanities Lab. Her research is published or forthcoming in venues including the Harvard Data Science Review, Poetics Today, Narrative Inquiry and Journal of Cultural Analytics. Prior to joining CMU, she was a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Applied Data Science at Washington University in St. Louis.
