Film and Visual Media: The Humanities in Motion

Film and Visual Media majors will come to see movies, television, AI, and new media as the Humanities in Motion. Students will tell their stories through images and gain the analytical and historical perspective necessary for literacy in an increasingly visual world.

The faculty at the Film and Visual media program encourages students to develop a personal vision, embrace collaborative and independent production, and look to visual communication as a place of social and political engagement.

Whether they seek a future in the arts, documentary, popular culture, business and marketing, or social media, graduates will have the knowledge to fully understand and interrogate the moving image, and the skills to create, collaborate, communicate, enlighten, and entertain.

Program Goals

• Understand the historical, artistic, and commercial context in which film and visual media are produced and consumed.
• Develop a mastery of visual storytelling through the study and creation of films, screenplays, and shorts, as well as AI content, virtual and augmented reality, and social media.
• Hone an individual vision, as well as the collaborative skills needed to produce and render that vision across a variety of media.

Financial Resources for Students

Students enrolled in the Film and Visual Media program have access to funds earmarked for film production and/or the payment of fees for submitting finished work to film festivals. Students pursuing the primary major, additional major, or BHA concentration have access to up to $650 for the purpose of supporting their personal creative work.  Students pursuing the minor have access to up to $500 for the purpose of supporting their personal creative work. Additional funds may be available through other sources which the Department can facilitate.

Recommended Curriculum Pathway for the B.A. in Film & Visual Media

This plan is the recommended pathway for completing the B.A. in Film & Visual Media in four years. While it is not required for students to follow this pathway precisely, it is highly recommended for students to do so, and we recommend students begin the major’s courses as early as possible. Students in Dietrich College may declare their primary major as early as the middle of their second semester. Students who have not declared their major in the Department of English may still take courses with us.
