Bio
I teach and research academic writing and reading to develop materials that help university students meet the challenges they face. Here at 糖心Vlog视频, I am the course lead for ENG 76-100 for multilingual students. By training, I am an applied linguist. I use quantitative and qualitative techniques related to corpus linguistics to discover lexical, grammatical, and discoursal patterns in large data sets. My current research projects examine stand-alone literature reviews across multiple disciplines and time periods. I have recently published a study on genre and register ties within lexical bundles in English for Specific Purposes Journal and a multidimensional (factor) analysis in Advances in Corpus-based Research on Academic Writing. She is also the creator of a new online reading and writing course for native and non-native speakers of English.
Reading to Write: Research Articles Across the Disciplines
Designed for graduate students and advanced undergraduates, this online course teaches the foundations of reading and writing research articles for publication across a variety of STEM and social science disciplines. Working with articles from a student’s chosen discipline, students learn how to parse and label an article’s structure (sections, e.g., introductions) and content (small segments of text, e.g., research questions), and to comprehend discipline-specific grammatical, vocabulary, and citation practices. The information gleaned from these analyses then functions as a guide for students when they write their own research articles.
