Spouse/Domestic Partner and Dependent Child(ren) Life and AD&D Insurance
Carnegie Mellon offers a life insurance option to full-time benefits eligible employees that provides benefits in the event of the death of their spouse/domestic partner and/or dependent children. Dependent life insurance includes an accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) component. The employee is the automatic beneficiary of the policy.
- To purchase dependent life insurance, you must also purchase employee optional life and AD&D insurance.
- Employees may elect to cover their spouse/registered domestic partner and/or dependent child(ren) under the age of 26.
- Enroll within 30 days of your benefits eligibility or enroll/increase coverage during Open Enrollment or during a qualifying life or family status change.
- Enrolling after initial eligibility, increasing coverage, or certain levels of coverage may require an Evidence of Insurability form, which the Benefits Office will send to you.
- The rate for this insurance is deducted from your pay after taxes have been assessed.
Spouse/Domestic Partner Life and AD&D Insurance
If you choose to participate in spouse/domestic partner life and AD&D insurance, your partner will be covered at a level equal to 50% of your employee optional life coverage up to a maximum of $250,000.
If you and your spouse/domestic partner are both full-time benefits eligible employees of CMU, you cannot elect spouse/domestic partner insurance. Instead, you can each enroll in optional life and AD&D insurance. If your spouse/domestic partner is a part-time benefits eligible employee of CMU, you can purchase dependent life insurance for them. However, your partner will not eligible to receive no cost basic life insurance or purchase additional AD&D coverage through the university.
